Million Dollar Fish

HISTORY OF MILLION DOLLAR FISH
Home to the famous barramundi, the Northern Territory is widely regarded as Australia’s top fishing destination for hooking one of these iconic tropical fish species. The Million Dollar Fish competition was first introduced in 2015 to boost visitation and to give fishos the chance to reel in prize-tagged barramundi. Renowned as Australia’s richest fishing competition, Million Dollar Fish continues to grow in size and value with more prize-tagged fish released each year. Barramundi are tagged and released right across the Territory in five main fishing regions including Arnhem Land, Darwin, Kakadu, Katherine and the Tiwi Islands. Since the competition launched, dozens of fishos from around Australia have cashed in by reeling in tagged barramundi, and hundreds more have won epic prizes from competition partners.SEASON 7

2022 Our Ocean Conference

The ocean gives us life. We rely on it for food, livelihoods, climate resilience and recreation. Ensuring the longevity of our planet’s life force requires decisive and collective action.
This year, the 7th Our Ocean Conference will be a key moment for countries, civil society, and industry to commit to concrete and significant actions to protect the ocean. The Republic of Palau is the first small island developing state (SIDS) to host the Our Ocean Conference. The conference’s theme is “Our Ocean, Our People, Our Prosperity,” which draws on Palau’s rich tradition as an ocean society and focuses on islander perspectives and approaches to ensuring the health of our ocean.
Our Ocean will focus on six Areas of Action, convening partners from across the globe to identify solutions to manage marine resources, increase ocean’s resilience to climate change and safeguard its health for generations to come. Each panel discussion will reflect the broader theme to amplify traditional ocean conservation knowledge, highlight vulnerable ocean communities and actions to mitigate impacts to ocean ecosystems that threaten peoples’ livelihoods around the globe.
As part of our commitments to explore solutions that connect social, economic and environmental challenges afflicting a sustainable ocean economy, WorldFish will support the goals of World Ocean Summit by continuing to showcase our research and innovation in shaping and advancing the way in which governments, businesses, and conservation organisations work together to fashion the ‘blue economy.’

4th World Small-Scale Fisheries Congress Asia-Pacific

Building Forward Better
Under the theme ‘Building Forward Better,’ the congress aims to discuss bold, innovative ideas and strategies needed for SSF to rebalance, rebuild and revitalize, following the devastating impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, natural disasters and climate change, set amidst the current and emerging challenges affecting their livelihoods and wellbeing. Building forward is also about being proactive and progressive in situating SSF in Asia-Pacific in a way that will accelerate their engagement in the global discourse about sustainable development, and help them be in a position to contribute to achieving SDGs.
Specifically, the congress will be organized around six main topics:
- Adjusting the JUSTICE lens
- Adjusting the GENDER lens
- Adjusting the FOOD lens
- Adjusting the GOVERNANCE lens
- Adjusting the FINANCIAL lens
- Adjusting the RESEARCH lens
Contributions are invited from researchers, students, young professionals, practitioners, fishers and fishers’ organizations, environmental groups and policy makers, interested in small-scale fisheries in the Asia-Pacific region. Abstracts for individual papers or organized sessions (about 250 words) are accepted until December 15, 2021.
We will continue to receive abstracts until December 31, but priorities (in terms of space in the program) will be given to early submissions. The registration for the 4WSFC Asia-Pacific congress will open in early March, 2022.
For those who need a bit more incentive, we are looking for people interested in establishing TBTI Country Hubs and coordinating research and capacity building activities in the country. Check out TBTI Japan for some ideas of what can be achieved once the hub is established. If you’re keen, put a team together and send a short vision statement (no more than one page) to tbti.global@gmail.com, by January 15, 2022. We will invite 1-2 members of the selected teams to Japan (with partial support) to present the vision and to exchange ideas with others and the congress host, TBTI Japan.
The 4WSFC Asia-Pacific is co-hosted by Tokai University and TBTI Japan, in partnership with Shizuoka City, TBTI Global with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and other key organizations.

However, increasing the scale of aquaculture intensification has resulted in a number of concerns that will require long-term solutions. As a result, it’s critical to disseminate information on technological advancements and new modern approaches to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture around the world. This scientific gathering is a positive move in the right direction.
This prestigious conference serves as a global colloquy for international researchers, scientists, academicians, ichthyologists, aquaculture experts, marine biologists and industry giants to present their research findings to the international community. International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing

Fisheries provide a vital source of food, employment, recreation, trade and economic well-being for people throughout the world. In a world of growing population and persistent hunger, fish has emerged as an important commodity for the achievement of food security. However, efforts by the international community to ensure the sustainability of fisheries are being seriously compromised by illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities.
According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities are responsible for the loss of 11–26 million tonnes of fish each year, which is estimated to have an economic value of US$10–23 billion. To curtail this impact, Target 4 of Goal 14 of the Sustainable Development Agenda adopted in 2015 by the UN General Assembly, specifically urges the international community to “effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices” by 2020.
Meeting this ambitious target requires strong awareness-raising efforts to draw the attention of the general public to the negative impacts of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities, an activity in which FAO has been actively engaged.
To promote long-term conservation and sustainable use of fisheries resources the 1995 FAO Conference adopted the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The Code is voluntary and sets out principles and international standards of behavior for responsible practices with a view to ensuring the effective conservation, management and development of living aquatic resources, with due respect for the ecosystem and biodiversity.
In 2009 the FAO Conference adopted the Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. The Agreement is binding and stipulates minimum port State measures to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. It entered into force on 5 June 2016.
In 2015, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean of the FAO proposed that an initiative be launched to declare an International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. Following extensive consultations, a proposal was submitted to the attention of the thirty-second session of FAO Committee on Fisheries.
The Committee on Fisheries endorsed the proposal for the declaration of 5 June as the International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. The date reflects the day when the Port State Measures Agreement officially entered into force as an international treaty. The entry into force of this agreement marks an historical event, as it is the first international legally-binding instrument specifically devoted to the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
The proposed draft resolution was submitted to the 40th Session of the FAO Conference (July 2017) for approval. In December 2017 the UN General Assembly in its annual resolution on sustainable fisheries proclaimed 5 June as the “International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.” In the same resolution the UN also declared 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture, which will help focus attention on the small-scale fishermen and women who comprise 90 percent of the world’s fisheries work force.
World Oceans Day

The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.
The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.
Even though all its benefits, the ocean is now in need of support.
With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. To protect and preserve the ocean and all it sustains, we must create a new balance, rooted in true understanding of the ocean and how humanity relates to it. We must build a connection to the ocean that is inclusive, innovative, and informed by lessons from the past.
The United Nations celebrates World Oceans Day every year on 8 June. They consider that day as an opportunity to raise global awareness of the benefits humankind derives from the ocean and our individual and collective duty to use its resources sustainably.
